In Sumpango Center, Guatemala, a brave mother of two is about to experience a life-changing moment. Thanks to ICF Homes generous partnership with the 141 project, Silvia’s family will receive their new cinder block home—finally giving this hardworking single mother and her daughters the security and dignity they deserve.
Silvia, 28, who studied up to 6th grade, works tirelessly knitting traditional blouses, earning $13 per day to support her family. Her two daughters, Katerine, 10, who is in 4th grade, and little Hilari, 6, who attends kindergarten, are her entire world. Four years ago, Silvia made the courageous decision to leave her husband due to domestic violence and alcoholism, choosing the wellbeing of her daughters and herself.
Her parents gave her a piece of land where she built a modest home made of 3 rows of cinderblocks and tin sheets with a concrete floor. The house has three small rooms: one bedroom for Silvia, a kitchen, and a bedroom for her daughters. Despite her efforts to provide shelter, Silvia dreams of something better for her children.
That’s what makes this moment so transformative. Thanks to ICF Homes donation, Silvia’s family will receive their very first complete cinder block home—making their dream come true. Construction is scheduled from August 4th to August 7th, 2025, and for the first time, this resilient family will have a truly safe and dignified place to call home.
As Silvia shared with our team, “I’m applying for a cinder block home because of my daughters. I would like them to have a nice home. I’m always thinking about their wellbeing.” This new home represents more than just better construction—it’s about providing stability and security for a mother who has already shown incredible strength in protecting her children.
ICF Homes, your partnership with the 141 project has made a beautiful difference. You’ve helped transform not just their living situation, but given this courageous mother the foundation she needs to continue building a better future for Katerine and Hilari.
A home is built with walls and beams, but a family is built with love and dreams. Thank you for being part of Silvia’s story. Your compassion has turned her hope into concrete walls and a solid roof—the foundation for a brighter, safer future.
